Updated on February 2nd 2023 to include Writer 32-bit as affected
What is the Cloud Server security change that affects Typefi Writer, and why are we making this change?
As part of our ongoing commitment to data security, and in alignment with our SOC 2® Type 2 compliance, we keep up to date with best practices, particularly when it comes to security.
On October 17th, 2022, Typefi will update the Transport Layer Security (TLS) settings on our cloud servers to only listen to versions 1.2 or higher—considered the most secure versions of the TLS protocol—which will provide a protected connection to keep your confidential information safe.

When will this security change happen?
The Typefi Cloud servers will be updated on October 17th, 2022, at 03:30 UTC and will be offline for 5 minutes.
Will the security change affect any other Typefi products?
The 64-bit editions of Typefi Writer 8.7.0, 8.7.1, 8.7.2, and 8.7.3 as well as the 32-bit edition of Typefi Writer 8.7.0 are affected.
Locally installed instances of Typefi Workgroup or Desktop are not affected.
How will this security update impact Typefi Writer?
Writer 64-bit edition
If on October 17th, 2022, your organisation has Typefi Writer 8.7.0, 8.7.1, 8.7.2, or 8.7.3 (64-bit edition) installed, you will be unable to attach new workflows or publish to workflows.
A warning window will appear that states, “Unable to establish a secure connection to https://your.cloud.server”.
Writer 32-bit edition
If on October 17th, 2022, your organisation has Typefi Writer 8.7.0 (32-bit edition) installed, you will be able to attach workflows but you will not not be able to publish documents.
Printmanager will fail with a warning that states, “Unable to establish a secure connection to https://your.cloud.server”.
What do I need to do to ensure my workflows are not impacted?
If you are currently working with Typefi Writer 8.7.0, 8.7.1, 8.7.2 or 8.7.3 (64-bit edition) you need to upgrade to Writer 8.7.4 (64-bit edition) before October 17th, 2022. 8.7.4 is now available to download from the FTP.
If you are currently working with Typefi Writer 8.7.0 (32-bit edition), you will need to upgrade to Typefi Writer 8.7.4 (32-bit edition). Typefi_Writer_x86-8.7.4_60.exe is now available to download from the FTP.
How do I upgrade my add-in?
To upgrade your Typefi Writer add-in, install Typefi Writer 8.7.4 (64-bit edition), available from the Typefi FTP.
If you are moving from a 32-bit version of Typefi, verify that your Typefi workflows are using both the Microsoft Word workflow plug-in (v18 or higher), and the Adobe InDesign workflow plug-in (v33 or higher).
How do I know what version I am currently running?
- Open Microsoft Word.
- Click the Typefi button in the ribbon.
- Click About in the Typefi ribbon to see the Typefi Writer version.
Why does it not affect all releases of Typefi Writer?
When we programmed the 64-bit edition of Writer 8.7, an error was introduced that prevented the automatic detection of the TLS version in use on our servers, instead listening only to version 1.0. This issue was fixed in Typefi Writer 8.7.3 64-bit edition.
The 32-bit editions of Typefi Writer were written using a different programming language which is why only Print Manager was affected.
I am happy using the 32-bit edition of Writer—why would I upgrade?
Though you do not need to upgrade to the 64-bit edition of Typefi Writer for this specific security issue, it is important to note that 32-bit editions of Typefi Writer are deprecated and no longer actively supported. We recommend updating to Typefi Writer 8.7.4 (64-bit edition) to benefit from our continued development.
