Create an Index Frame

Index Frames are used for inserting an automatically generated index. An Index Frame must be placed on each parent (formerly master) page defined in a Typefi Index Section (see Typefi Section types).

Typefi Designer builds on InDesign’s native indexing feature and is compatible with the standard Microsoft Word indexing feature. During the automated page composition process, index markers in the source content are transformed into InDesign index markers. The Index Frames are then populated with the index marker data (as specified in the Generate Index dialog), creating new document pages and filling these frames, until all the index content is placed.

To create an Index Frame:

1. Open the Pages panel (Window → Pages) and select a parent page.
2. Create an InDesign text frame and select it.
   
3. Choose Object → Typefi Frame Type → Index. Alternatively, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (macOS) the selected frame and choose Typefi Frame Type → Index from the shortcut menu. The Index Frame border is assigned a colour (violet by default).
   

You can also specify how the index entries will be formatted during the pagination process:

1. Create the paragraph and character styles needed for formatting the index. Since the index is formatted with the default InDesign Index styles, you will need to create and modify those style definitions if you want the index to look different than the standard InDesign index. The default styles are named Index Title, Index Section Head, Index Level 1, Index Level 2, and so on. Depending on how many levels of 'nesting' are needed, more styles may be defined. Microsoft Word only allows one level of nesting.
2. Open the Index panel (Window → Type & Tables → Index).
3. Select the Generate index icon at the bottom of the panel; or choose Generate Index from the panel menu.
   
4. In the Generate Index dialog, select More Options to view additional options for formatting the index entries. See About Indexing from the Adobe InDesign User Guide for detailed information about formatting an index.
   
5. Select OK to apply the settings to your template.

If you created specific paragraph and character styles for formatting an index, consider placing them into a separate Style Group (with Export To TemplateXML disabled), so they are not accessible in Typefi Writer.
