InDesign Server 2020 and later do not support videos, as Adobe blocks flash content from running. There is no workaround at this time.
The video files you insert can be played when the document is exported to Adobe PDF or EPUB. During the automated page composition process, an Element Video Frame is populated with the video file that is referenced in its corresponding Typefi Element.
To ensure your video content can be played by a broad range of media players and hardware devices, we recommend that you use the MP4 file format.
- Create a graphic frame and select it.
- Choose Object → Typefi Frame Type → Element Video. Alternatively, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (macOS) the selected frame and choose Typefi Frame Type → Element Video from the shortcut menu.
- In the Element Video Options dialog:
- Choose an option from the Fitting pop-up menu to determine how the poster image will be sized when it is placed into the frame during page composition. There are six options to choose from: None, Fit Frame to Content, Fit Content to Frame, Fit Content Proportionally, Fit Frame Proportionally, or Center Content. For detailed information about each fitting option, see Adobe InDesign User Guide → Work with frames and objects → Fit objects to frames.
- Select Play On Page Load to play the video file when you turn to the page on which the video object is located.
- Select Loop to play the video repeatedly.
- Choose an option from the Poster pop-up menu to specify which graphic you want to appear in the play area (defined by the size of the Element Video Frame). There are three options to choose from: None, Standard, or Choose Image. The Standard option displays a generic movie poster that isn’t based on the contents of the file. If you choose a custom image, it will be embedded in the template. During page composition, the same poster image will be used for each iteration of the element.
- Choose an option from the Controller pop-up menu to specify one of the built-in InDesign controller skins that enable you to pause, start, and stop a video. This option is only compatible with H.264-encoded MP4 files or Flash Video (FLV or F4V) files.
- If you selected an option from the Controller pop-up menu, enable Show Controller on Rollover to display the controls when the mouse pointer hovers over the video object.
- Click OK to apply the settings. The Element Video Frame border is assigned a colour (purple by default).
Edit an Element Video Frame
- Select an Element Video Frame.
- Choose Object → Typefi Frame Options. Alternatively, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (macOS) the selected frame and choose Typefi Frame Options from the shortcut menu.
- In the Element Video Options dialog, change the settings as needed.
- Click OK to apply the settings.
The Element Video Options applied to an Element Video Frame serve as pre-assigned settings in a template. After using Typefi to generate an InDesign file, you can modify the settings applied to individual media files by choosing Window→ Interactive → Media.
Known issue
If Create InDesign document uses InDesign Server 2020 or 2021, you cannot insert a video Element in a Typefi Writer document and publish it. If you try to publish a document with a video Element, you get this error message: Error: Request failed because the underlying functionality is no longer available in the current version of the application. This error occurs because Adobe now blocks Flash content from running. There is no workaround at this time.
