A filler parent (formerly master) page is a page that is inserted at the beginning of a Typefi Section to make sure the Typefi Section starts on a required left or right-hand page.
To specify a filler parent page:
- Open the Typefi Section panel (Window → Typefi → Sections).
- Open the Typefi Section Options dialog: select the name of a Typefi Section, then go to Panel menu → Section Options. Alternatively, double-click the name of a Typefi Section.
- Within the Pages tab, choose a parent page from the Filler pop-up menu.
How do filler parent pages work?
During the automated page composition process, Typefi inserts a filler parent page at the beginning of a Typefi Section. For example, if the next Typefi Section must start on a right-hand page, and the previous Typefi Section ends on a right-hand page, then Typefi will insert a filler parent page between them. The filler parent page can be a specially designed parent page or [None], which inserts a blank page.
Since [None] is the default option, you can often leave this field unchanged.
🔑 Key Concept: When specifying a filler parent page for a particular Typefi Section, keep in mind that Typefi will add the filler parent page at the beginning of that Typefi Section.
Practical example
You are designing a publication that is organised into different chapters. Each chapter should start on a right-hand page. If a chapter happens to end on a right-hand page, you'll need a filler page at the beginning of the next chapter so that the next chapter also starts on a right-hand page.
To do this, configure a Typefi Section named "Chapter". The Typefi Section Options dialog looks like this:
In the Typefi Sections Options dialog, specify two different parent pages for each chapter. The first parent page is the chapter opener, and the second parent page is the chapter continuation pages (named CO-Chapter Opener and CC-Chapter Continued in the screenshot above).
The chapter opener should always start on a right-hand page, so choose Right Side from the Starts on pop-up menu. To insert an empty page on the left-hand side, choose [None] from the Filler pop-up menu,
It doesn't matter what side the chapter continuation pages start on, so choose Either Side from the Starts on pop-up menu. However, you may need a filler page so that the next chapter opener page can start on a right-hand page. Choose the parent page you would like to use as your filler page from the Filler pop-up menu.
During the automated page composition process, Typefi will insert the filler page you specify as a left-hand page between the right-hand page at the end of the current chapter, and the right-hand page at the beginning of the next chapter.
This behaviour is true whether the next Typefi Section is another "Chapter," or something else that is required to start on a right-hand page.
