This article only applies to Typefi customers running InDesign Server 2021 or later.
This article explains how to perform a minor version update, such as updating from Adobe InDesign Server 2024 version 19.3 to 19.5.
If instead, you need to perform a major version upgrade, for example upgrading from Adobe InDesign Server 2022 to InDesign Server 2024, please refer to Upgrading to Adobe InDesign Server 2022 or later.

Though out of support, Adobe InDesign Server 2021 version 16.4 was a required update with Typefi Designer 8.7.2 build 1231.

This documentation provides instructions for downloading, installing, and configuring a minor version update for Adobe InDesign Server 2021 or later. Please allow approximately 15 minutes to complete the update.

1. Prep ↩
All file paths presume a default installation location of InDesign Server so if your setup is customized, please adapt accordingly. 20##
in file paths should be replaced with the version of Adobe InDesign Server you are updating from.

Make sure you have admin privileges. | You'll need admin privileges to update Adobe InDesign Server. If you don't have admin privileges, make sure you have access to credentials of a username and password with admin privileges to fill in during the install. |
Local or service account? | Open the Services application and find “InDesignServerService x64” in the list of services. If Log on as states Local System you don't need to do anything else. If Log on as states something else, make note of the service account and ensure you obtain the password for this account. |

Obtain Adobe InDesign Server installer and license
If your Adobe InDesign Server license was purchased through Typefi
Contact your Solutions Consultant to let them know you want to update. We will provide you with a URL to the Adobe InDesign Server installer.
If your Adobe InDesign Server license was not purchased through Typefi
Check with your internal team or external vendor about how to obtain the installer.
2. Download additional files↩
Only relevant if newer versions are available.
- Typefi Designer Server, located in the
Typefi__Designer Server
folder on the Typefi FTP - Typefi Typefitter Server (if used), located in the
Typefi__Typefitter
folder on the Typefi FTP - MathTools (if used)
- Any other plug-ins that you may be using
3. Stop InDesign Server↩
- Use Windows search to launch the Services app.
- Locate "InDesignServerService x64".
- Right-click and choose Stop.
4. Install new components↩
In this step, you will run the installers you downloaded from the Typefi FTP, as well as any third-party plug-ins.
4.1 Install the Adobe InDesign Server update
- Right-click the Adobe InDesign Server .zip file and choose Properties.
- If needed, under Attributes, click the checkbox to Unblock and click OK.
- Extract the ZIP.
- Open the
Build
folder. - Double-click
setup
which will launch the Creative Cloud Installer.- When complete, a dialog will appear stating: Installation successful.
- Adobe InDesign Server is now installed.
4.2 Install plug-ins
This step is only relevant if there are newer versions of plugins available
- Run the Typefi Designer Server installer, making sure to update the path to the installation if Adobe InDesign Server was installed somewhere other than the default location.
- Update and license Typefitter Server (if required).
- Update and license any other third-party plug-ins like MathTools (if required).
4.3 Verify Log on As
During Prep, you determined how the InDesignServerService x64 is running. Now, verify things are still the same after the update.
- Use Windows search to launch the Services app.
- Locate InDesignServerService x64 and check if the value under the column Log on as is the same as you noted in your prep.
If it was previously configured as a Local account:
- Right-click InDesignServerService and choose Properties.
- Make sure Allow service to interact with desktop is checked.
- Click OK.
- Change the startup from Manual to Automatic (if needed).
To change from a Local account to a Service account
- Right-click and choose Properties.
- Switch to the Log On tab.
- Change the setting from Local System account to This account.
- Click Browse to find the account that you made note of in your Prep.
- Enter the password for this account that you made note of in your Prep.
- Click OK.
- Change the startup from Manual to Automatic (if needed).
4.4 Restart
Reboot the computer
5. Verify things are running↩
- Use Windows search to launch the Services app.
- Verify InDesignServerService x64 is shown as Running.
- Close Services.
- Use Windows search to launch the Task Manager. You may need to set it to Advanced
- There should be two processes running:
- One or more variations of InDesignServer if you are running multi-instance InDesign.
- InDesignServerService
- One or more variations of InDesignServer if you are running multi-instance InDesign.
6. Update client machines ↩
This step is only relevant if there is a new version of Typefi Designer for client machines.
On each machine that uses standard InDesign, ensure that you install the compatible version of Typefi Designer.
- Download the installer from the
Typefi__Designer
folder on the Typefi FTP. - Run the installer on each machine, or use the instructions for unattended installation.
