MathML equations are displayed differently depending on if they are inline or block.
Block equations are sometimes referred to as display equations in authoring tools.
If an equation is displayed as inline, then it is styled to fit within the available space between lines of text within a paragraph. Inline equations are represented in MathML as <math
display="inline">
or just <math>
.
If the equation is displayed as block, then it can have more space on the top and bottom, since it's not tied to any line height. Block equations are represented in MathML as <math display="block">
.
