With Profiles, you can apply different copyfitting rules for different types of text. 

How Profiles work

Typefitter automatically fixes problems with your copy using Profiles. A Profile contains rules that define what kind of problems Typefitter will catch. Each rule defines three things:

• The problem that this rule tries to fix, such as runts or oversets.
• Which paragraph styles the rule can modify to fix the problem.
• Which attributes the rule can adjust to fix the problem, such as word spacing or tracking.

You can tell Typefitter to go through the text in your document or story. It goes through paragraphs, columns and stories, checking all the rules to see if there is a violation. When Typefitter finds a violation, it can attempt to automatically fix it if you have selected either Fix or Fix All.

When Typefitter tries to fix a rule violation, it will find the slightest adjustment it needs to make to the attributes it is allowed to modify to fix the problem. If it can’t fix the problem without making adjustments larger than the rule limits defined in your Profile, it will leave your text unchanged and alert you.

You can create different Profiles with different sets of rules suited for different occasions. For example, sometimes you may only want to fix runts, while at other times, you might want to fix both runts and oversets. To do this, you would create two different Profiles with different sets of rules, and then you can switch back and forth between them. You can create as many Profiles as you need.

Default Profiles

There is always a default Profile called [Default]. You can’t rename or delete this Profile, but you can edit it. The [Default] Profile contains some preset automated rules so that you can get started using Typefitter quickly. These rules can be edited, duplicated, or deleted as you’d like.

Additionally, when you first start Typefitter, you’ll see a few Profiles already created with individual rules. Again, these exist to help you get started, but you can ignore or delete them as you’d like. They are:

• Find and fix oversets
• Find and fix runts
• Find holes at the bottom of columns
• Make columns even with frame bottoms

Any Profiles that are created when no document is open will be copied over to newly created documents.

Profile settings

When you create or edit a Profile, you will work in a selectable dialog with three different panes:

1. Copyfit slider
2. Automated Rules
3. Rule Defaults

Copyfit slider

In this pane, you set limits for the Copyfit slider. The Copyfit slider defines what happens when you move the Copyfit slider to tighten or loosen text.

Automated Rules

In this pane, you define the automated rules within a Profile.

When Typefitter tries to fix a rule violation, it is only allowed to modify an attribute a certain amount. How much you’re willing to allow Typefitter to modify is defined here in the Rule Defaults panel.
