Cross-references consist of two parts: the cross-reference source and the cross-reference format. The cross-reference source is the content you are referencing. The cross-reference format determines what content makes up the cross-reference; they typically contain source text, a page number, or a combination of both. When you insert a cross-reference in Typefi Writer, you choose the cross-reference source and the cross-reference format.
During the automated page composition process, Microsoft Word’s built-in cross-references are ignored. However, bookmarks used for cross-references are retained (bookmarks in Word are converted to equivalent bookmarks in Adobe InDesign). To make sure cross-references are preserved in the final output, insert them using Typefi Writer, not Word.
To insert a cross-reference:
- Place your cursor within a paragraph where you want to insert the cross-reference.
- In the Typefi tab, within the Insert group, click Cross-reference.
- In the Insert Cross-Reference dialogue, click Select to select a cross-reference source.
- In the Select Cross-Reference Source dialogue:
- Choose the document where the cross-reference source is located in the Document pop-up menu. By default, the current document is selected. However, you can also choose a different document, as long as both documents are attached to the same workflow.
To check which workflow a document is attached to, click the Typefi tab in the Word ribbon, and then click Workflow. The attached workflow name is displayed in the dialogue.
- Choose Paragraphs or Bookmarks to select a cross-reference source. The source is content styled with a Typefi paragraph style or a Word bookmark.
- Click OK.
- Choose the document where the cross-reference source is located in the Document pop-up menu. By default, the current document is selected. However, you can also choose a different document, as long as both documents are attached to the same workflow.
- Choose a Format from the pop-up menu. The format determines what content is inserted at the cursor. Cross-references can contain source text, a page number, or a combination of both. Typefi cross-reference formatting options are defined using the formatting options in Adobe InDesign.
- Click OK.
The cross-reference is now inserted and stands out with its default orange background colour:
In Word, you will not see the actual content of the cross-reference—only the Typefi markup indicating a CROSS-REF and the type of content it is a reference to. The resolved cross-reference will appear in the final job output. If the output format supports it (for example, web-ready PDFs and EPUBs), Typefi automatically hyperlinks the cross-reference to its source.
When publishing cross-references to external documents, you must publish content from a Typefi Server; otherwise, there will be unresolved cross-references. See Publish a document with external cross-references for more information.
