You can use both cross-references and hyperlinks to link to other content. But, each is best suited for different use cases:
- Cross-references are links to other content (either a particular paragraph or a Word bookmark) within the same document or a different one. Cross-references can dynamically update themselves if the reference content's location changes (for example, a chart moves to a different page).
- Hyperlinks are graphics or text that link to another file or object. Use hyperlinks when you want to link to text other than a heading or if you want to link to an external source. If you're going to convert existing text into a link, you should insert a hyperlink instead.
Cross-references
A cross-reference enables you to link to other content. For example, you might use a cross-reference to link to a chart or graphic elsewhere in a document.
In Typefi Writer, you can use cross-references to reference content in particular paragraphs, bookmarks, or even other documents. The cross-reference text is taken from the source content. Cross-references can be formatted with a variety of choices and will be hyperlinked to the source.
The cross-reference formatting determines what content is inserted at the cursor. Cross-references can contain source text, a page number, or both. Typefi cross-reference formatting options are defined using the formatting options in Adobe InDesign.
During the automated page composition process, Microsoft Word’s built-in cross-references are ignored. However, bookmarks used for cross-references are retained (bookmarks in Word are converted to equivalent bookmarks in Adobe InDesign). To make sure cross-references are preserved in the final output, insert them using Typefi Writer, not Word.
Hyperlinks
Not all hyperlinks in a Microsoft Word document are retained in the final output after the automated composition process. Typefi Hyperlinks are a special type of hyperlink that ensures the hyperlink destination is retained in the final output.
When you type an email or web address, Word automatically converts it to a hyperlink. These hyperlinks are retained in the final document after Typefi’s page composition process.
However, hyperlinks to paragraphs or bookmarks are not retained in the final document; you must insert these types of hyperlinks as Typefi Hyperlinks.
In summary, standard Microsoft Word hyperlinks point to email and web addresses. They are retained in the final output. Hyperlinks to paragraphs and bookmarks are not retained; you must insert them as Typefi Hyperlinks.
Standard Word hyperlinks | Typefi Hyperlinks | |
---|---|---|
Target destination | Email addresses, web addresses | Paragraph styles, bookmarks |
If you link to a paragraph style or bookmark in a different document, the workflow must be attached to that document too.
