Typefitter not only finds common typographic issues, but it also recommends fixes for them. You can specify where in your document you want Typefitter to search for issues.
To find a typographic issue, click Find. To move to the next issue, click Find again.
Typefitter can identify these typographic issues:
Issue | Description |
---|---|
Overset text | Text that vanishes from your document if it can't fit into its text frame. |
Short lines (runts) | The last word, or part of a word, of a paragraph stranded by itself on a line. |
Widows and orphans | Traditionally, widows and orphans are a single line of text at the beginning (widow) or end (orphan) of a paragraph that has been separated from the rest of the paragraph by a column or page break. Typefitter also finds widows and orphans across multiple paragraphs of hierarchical content such as numbered lists, table of contents, or inside an index. For example, Typefitter will identify a level 1 table of contents (TOC) item at the bottom of a page followed by a level 2 TOC item at the top of the following page as a widow, or the last list item alone at the top of a column as an orphan. |
You can choose the typographic rules you want Typefitter to find in the Typefitter Preferences.
In Typefitter 5 Professional, you can also Fix & Find and Fix All issues.
Button | Description |
---|---|
Fix & Find | Typefitter identifies a typographic issue and fixes it before moving to the next one. If there are no more typographic issues, you'll see an alert that says there are no more fixable errors. |
Fix All | Typefitter identifies and fixes all typographic issues at one time. If there are no typographic issues, you'll see an alert that says there are no more fixable errors. |
Find and fix issues within a range
Searching only the Document or the selected Story is limited; with Typefitter, you can search for typographic issues within a specific range (similar to searching InDesign's Find/Change).
Typefitter supports a full range of search options:
- Document (default): search the entire document
- Story: search the story that contains the insertion point or selected text
- End of Story: search from the insertion point. End of Story only appears if an insertion point is placed
- Selection: search only the selected text. Selection only appears if text is selected
To change the search scope, choose an option from the Search pop-up menu.
In addition, you can add modifiers to improve the search performance by restricting or limiting the scope. These modifiers are supported:
- Include Master Pages (this option is only applicable when Search = Document)
- Include Footnotes
- Include Tables
All modifiers are enabled by default and can be disabled ad hoc (regardless of the selected search range). To turn off a modifier, open the Typefitter panel menu and deselect the modifier.
Get feedback
The Info pane tells you the typographic problem that was found and provides suggested fixes.
For example, Problem: Overset text: 13 characters". Fix: Edit paragraph style settings, resize the text frame, or edit the text to fit within the frame. Add text frames to the story if necessary.
To open the Info pane, click the arrow next to Info.
Clicking the error message changes the page view of the document to show the selection and changes the page zoom to Fit Page in Window.
To move to the next error, click the right arrow button. To go back to the previous error, click the left arrow button.
To see how many typography errors Typefitter found, look at the status message at the bottom of the Typefitter panel. A red circle indicates that there are errors that still need to be addressed. A green circle indicates that there are no errors.
