A single Floating Element can be applied to multiple design alternatives, called Element variants. Each variant has its own set of layout rules. These layout rules help determine where a variant is placed.
When you apply an Element, you can set layout rules for the vertical and horizontal placement of the variant. You can also set the priority of each Align with... rule, and specify if the variant can appear on left or right pages.
Vertical alignment
The vertical alignment rules determine how a variant is vertically positioned on a page. You can specify which part of the variant (top, middle, or bottom) that should Align with another object, the Y offset, and the top and bottom limits.
Align with...
The vertical Align with... rules specify which side of the variant (top, middle, or bottom) are vertically aligned to a specific part of another object. Use the Rule Options dialog (click one of the Align with... rules to open the dialog) to configure each rule. Align with... has different alignment settings, depending on which rule you configure.
If you are configuring the Align with top of…, Align with middle of…, or Align with bottom of… rule, choose an option from the Align menu (Top, Middle, or Bottom) to specify which side of the variant will be aligned to the top, middle, or bottom of the option you specify in the Of pop-up menu.
You can choose the following options:
Align (top, middle or bottom) of float to (top, middle, or bottom) of ____ | Description |
---|---|
Column Edge | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the variant to the text column that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
Text Frame | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the variant to the Typefi Frame that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
Page Margin | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the variant to the page margin. |
Page Edge | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the variant to the page edge. |
Master Element | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the variant to its original master page location. Setting these limits to Master Element makes sure the vertical positioning on a document page matches the location of the variant on the master page where it was created. |
If you are configuring the Align with... of anchor rule, choose an option from the Align menu (Top, Middle, or Bottom) to specify which side of the variant will be aligned to a specific part of the Typefi Anchor.
Align (top, middle or bottom) of float to ____ of anchor | Description |
---|---|
Baseline | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the float to the baseline of its corresponding Typefi Anchor in the text. |
Cap Height | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the float to the top of the capital letters in the line of text that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
Top of Leading | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the float to the top of the leading space (distance between two baselines) in the line of text that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. In other words, the float is aligned to the baseline of the previous line of text. |
Top of Paragraph | Aligns the top, middle or bottom of the float to the top of the first line of the paragraph that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
To display Typefi Anchors in InDesign, click View → Show Typefi Anchors.
Y offset
The Y Offset defines how much further the variant is vertically positioned after it is placed. A positive value moves the variant downward. A negative value moves the variant upward.
Top and bottom limits
The top and bottom limits constrain the positioning of the variant vertically. This setting takes precedence over the Align with... and Y Offset rules, and overrides them if necessary to position the variant within the specified boundaries.
You can choose the following options:
Top and bottom limits | Description |
---|---|
No Limit | The variant can be placed inside and outside the page boundaries. When this option is specified, the Align and Y Offset options take precedence. |
Column Edge | The variant must be placed within the boundary of the text column that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
Text Frame | The variant must be placed within the boundary of the Typefi Frame that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
Page Margin | The variant must be placed within the page margins. |
Page Edge | The variant must be placed within the page edges. |
Master Element | The float must be placed within the boundary defined by its position on the master page. |
Horizontal alignment
The horizontal alignment rules determine how a variant is horizontally positioned on a page. You can specify which part of the variant (top, middle, or bottom) that should Align with another object, the X offset, and the left and right limits.
Align with...
The horizontal Align with... rules specify which side of the variant (top, middle, or bottom) will be horizontally aligned to a specific part of another object. The settings are the same for all four Align with… rules.
Align (left, centre, right, outside, inside) of float to (left, centre, right, outside, inside) of ____ | Description |
---|---|
No Limit |
Variant placement can fall inside as well as outside the page boundaries. Where No Limit is selected, the X-offset and Align with… options will take precedence. |
Column Edge | Aligns the left, centre, right, outside, or inside of the float to the text column that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
Text Frame | Aligns the left, centre, right, outside, or inside of the float to the Typefi Frame that contains its corresponding Typefi Anchor. |
Page Margin | Aligns the left, centre, right, outside, or inside of the float to the page margin. |
Page Edge | Aligns the left, centre, right, outside, or inside of the float to the page edge. |
Master Element | Aligns the left, centre, right, outside, or inside of the float to its original master page location. |
X offset
The X Offset defines how much further the variant is horizontally positioned after it is placed. A positive value moves the variant to the right. A negative value moves the variant to the left.
Left and right limits
The left and right limits constrain the positioning of the variant horizontally. This setting takes precedence over the Align with... and X Offset rules, and overrides them if necessary to position the variant within the specified boundaries.
You can choose the following options:
Left and right limits | Description |
Master Element | The variant must be placed within the boundary defined by its position on the master page. |
To position variant, so its edges align with the bleed guides, align it to the Page Edge and specify a negative value of -3mm (1/8 inch) for both the Y Offset and X Offset. Also, be sure that No Limit has been specified for both the vertical and horizontal limits; otherwise, they will override the negative offset values and force the element to be placed within the specified boundaries.
Priority bars
Each Align with… rule has its own priority bar. The priority bars set the importance level of the rule.
Priorities can range from none (0) to some (1, 2, 3), to full (4).
To edit the priority level for an Align with… rule, click on one of the bars. Clicking to the left of the smallest bar sets the priority level to none.
During the automated page composition process, Typefi considers all rules and priority levels set for each variant. Typefi then determines the best possible layout for placing the variants according to the highest combined priority levels. For example, when one Align with… rule has a priority setting, and others don’t, Typefi will use the priority setting and matching Align with… rules for placement of the variant.
To align a variant to the top of the page and never any other position, set the
Align with top rule of text frame rule to the highest priority and set the priority level to none for all other Align with… rules.
Can appear on left and right pages
Can appear on left pages and Can appear on right pages refer only to documents with facing pages (left and right-spreads). Select or deselect the checkbox to specify if a variant can appear on left or right pages. Select both to allow the variant to be placed on both left and right pages.
