Adobe InDesign and InDesign Server only support MathML, a specification for encoding both the presentation of mathematical notation and mathematical content through a third-party plug-in, movemen MathTools. MathTools provides built-in equation editor functionality—equations are expressed as fully editable text, not inline images—and MathML import and export features.
Typefi and MathTools
Typefi is pleased to partner with movemen to provide you with solutions for typesetting complex math equations. We will always do our best to support you in using MathTools, but please be aware that we are limited in our abilities regarding bug fixes or feature requests. Though we work closely with the developers at movemen, their product roadmap is under their discretion.
Which version of MathTools do I need?
MathTools is available in two versions: Enterprise and Pro. If you are not planning to edit equations locally, you can use the MathTools Reader (free download available on the MathTools website).
Typefi Server for Workgroup (Typefi Workgroup) requires the Enterprise version of MathTools for InDesign Server. MathTools Pro doesn't include the necessary scripting support for integration with Typefi Server workflows.
Client licenses for MathTools for InDesign (local to your computer) should be licensed depending on your use. Anyone working on InDesign templates for Typefi should have at least the MathTools Pro version. If you need to edit equations locally in InDesign after Typefi's automated page composition process is complete, you could use either MathTools Pro or MathTools Enterprise. If you planned to manipulate the composed equations using InDesign scripts locally, you need a local license for MathTools Enterprise.

How do I install MathTools?
To install MathTools (for either InDesign or InDesign Server), please follow movemen's installation instructions. When you first install MathTools, it will be unlicensed and in Reader mode.
How do I set up my MathTools license?
MathTools subscription licenses are only issued after Typefi has received payment, and a license report is generated by the customer. From this point, it may take up to 10 business days to receive a license.
- After installing MathTools, the first thing you want to do is create a license report. See HOW TOs (Installation, Licensing) for instructions.
- Send the license report to your Solutions Consultant. Your Solutions Consultant will send you back the license file.
- Install the license. See HOW TOs (Installation, Licensing) for instructions.
When should I upgrade MathTools?
We recommend updating MathTools whenever a new version is released. You can download the latest versions here: MathTools for InDesign and MathTools for InDesign Server.
To upgrade to a newer version of MathTools for InDesign:
- Download the latest MathTools installation package from the MathTools Download Area. Make sure to install the MathTools package that matches your InDesign version. If you are using Microsoft Windows, make sure you unblock it.
- If InDesign is open, close it.
- Move the
movemen
folder from the InDesign Plug-ins folder somewhere else (for example, your Desktop). - Extract the ZIP archive you downloaded in Step 1 to the InDesign Plug-ins folder inside the InDesign application folder.
- Navigate to your old
movemen
folder (moved in Step 3) and select the license file (for example,movemen/lic/mt.MathToolsV2.lic
). -
IMPORTANT Copy your existing license file and paste it into the new
movemen
folder you extracted to the InDesign Plug-ins folder in Step 4. - Open InDesign.
- Choose Math → Licensing → Verify License.
- Close and reopen InDesign.
- Verify that MathTools is activated: create a new document and choose Math → Enable Math for Current Document.
How do I renew MathTools?
If you are renewing MathTools for InDesign, so long as payment is received on time, there should be no action required during a renewal.
If you are renewing MathTools for InDesign Server, so long as payment is received on time, there should be minimal action required during a renewal. When renewing MathTools for InDesign Server, we recommend:
- Restarting the InDesign Server service.
- Upgrading to the latest version of MathTools for InDesign.
Troubleshooting
This troubleshooting section is specifically intended for customers who have purchased a MathTools license through Typefi. For all other support queries, please contact movemen directly.
My MathTools license purchased through Typefi stopped working
If your MathTools license purchased through Typefi stopped working, first make sure you are using the latest version of MathTools. (Download the latest installation package from the MathTools Download Area.) When upgrading, confirm that you have copied over your existing license file into the movemen/lic
folder. If you do not copy your existing license file, your new version of MathTools will not be activated.
If the license still won't activate, complete these troubleshooting steps:
- Close and reopen InDesign.
- Choose Math → Licensing → Verify License.
- Close and reopen InDesign again.
- Verify that MathTools is activated: create a new document and choose Math → Enable Math for Current Document.
It is also very useful for us to obtain the Caches folder which contains MathTools logs. Here is an example of the location path and files of interest:
If the license still won't activate, close and reopen InDesign again. Create a license report (Math → Licensing → Create License Report) and send it to help@typefi.com.
Troubleshooting MathTools for InDesign Server
If you are experiencing problems with MathTools for InDesign Server (licensing or otherwise), please restart InDesign Server and test to see if the issue is gone.
If the issue persists, submit the following to help@typefi.com:
- The
mt.MathToolsV2.lic
file, located inc:\program files\adobe\adobe indesign server 2021\plug-ins\movemen\lic
, or wherever InDesign Server is installed. - The entire
Caches
folder, zipped. TheCaches
folder must contain a file namedmt.MathToolsV2.xml
and a folder namedMathTools
. You can find the logs in one of these locations:C:\Users\<YOUR_SERVICE_ADMIN_ACCOUNT>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign Server\Version 16.0\en_US\Caches
-
C:\Windows\syswow64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign Server\Version 16.0\en_US\Caches
You cannot access this path directly. You must navigate toc:\windows\system32
and then click into the folders as they require elevation.
Generating a MathTools License Report
If requested, please use the following steps to generate a MathTools License Report from InDesign Server:
- Download the
tp8_movemen_license.zip
. Do not unzip this archive. - Log into Typefi Server and then drag-and-drop the
tp8_movemen_license.zip
into your browser window (when prompted, click Expand to expand the archive into a full Typefi workflow). - Go to Files → tps_movemen_license and then edit the MathTools License Report workflow.
- Select the target InDesign Server from the dropdown menu and then Run the workflow to generate the
mtv2_licreport.xml
file (MathTools License Report).
Note: if you move this workflow somewhere other than the root of your Files, you'll need to update the paths for the Create InDesign document workflow in the MathTools License Report workflow (see General → Input, General → InDesign template, and Event scripts → Document Start).
