Typefi AutoFit comes in three editions: Free, Professional, and Server. Visit our website to download the Free edition or purchase a subscription.
Typefi AutoFit is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign that enables you to create dynamic page objects that react and respond automatically as content changes.
You can define relationships between objects, apply auto-sizing behaviours to text frames, enforce minimum and maximum frame sizes, and automatically balance columns in multi-column text frames.
When you install Typefi AutoFit, two components are added to InDesign: the AutoFit tool and the AutoFit panel.
Using the Typefi AutoFit tool
The Typefi AutoFit tool is used to define parent-child relationships between objects so that when the 'parent’ object is moved or resized, its 'child' objects automatically adjust accordingly.
In this example, linking the bottom edge of the parent object to the endpoint of the black rectangle makes the rectangle resize automatically to match the height of the parent object. See Frame handles and Typefi AutoFit relationships for the different Typefi AutoFit behaviours for each frame handle.
Because changes to a parent automatically apply to each child, to change a parent-child relationship move the child object.
Typefi AutoFit relationships persist across layers and can even affect objects within groups. You can also create more complex relationships by linking a parent object to multiple children (a one-to-many relationship) or linking multiple objects together in sequence (a multi-generational relationship). For more information, see Creating complex Typefi AutoFit relationships.
To access the Typefi AutoFit tool, choose Window → Tools, and select the Typefi AutoFit icon near the bottom of the Tools panel.
Using the Typefi AutoFit panel
The Typefi AutoFit panel is used to apply dynamic behaviours to frames. The Auto-size options enable you to configure text frames that automatically resize with their content (see Auto-sizing your text frames). The selected Reference Point indicates how a text frame resizes (see Specifying a reference point). You can also use the Typefi AutoFit panel to balance columns in multi-column text frames and enforce frame size limits.
To access the Typefi AutoFit panel, choose Window → Typefi → AutoFit.
Typefi AutoFit relationships and any settings applied in the Typefi AutoFit panel are preserved when exporting to a snippet file, an object library, or as an InDesign Interchange (INX) or InDesign Markup (IDML) file.
Using scripting to do more
The Free edition of Typefi AutoFit, available for download from the Typefi website, is not scriptable or licensed for use with InDesign Server.
With an annual paid subscription, you can access the Professional or Server editions of Typefi AutoFit (version 8.17 or later), which can be integrated with other workflows using InDesign scripting. If you're interested in learning how to use scripting to maximize the potential of Typefi AutoFit, consider watching this webinar: Do More with Scripting: Scripting Typefi AutoFit, led by Peter Kahrel.
Typefi AutoFit is also available as part of Typefi Designer, a commercial suite of plug-ins for Adobe InDesign to help you build design intelligence into layouts that can be automated with InDesign Server.
