This article aims to help on-premises local administrators using Typefi Workgroup v8.7 or later understand the difference between assigning permissions to a group and privileges to a role and how they work together.
While many features for groups and roles were introduced in Typefi Workgroup v8.7 or earlier, we recommend upgrading to Typefi Workgroup v8.18. This version offers the latest improvements and bug fixes. See what's new in Typefi Server v8.18.

Creating Groups and assigning Roles gives local administrators better control over what users are allowed to do on your server, which helps you prevent unintended access to content and keeps your environment secure.
Local administrators can control access in Typefi Server by:
- assigning Roles and giving or revoking user privileges for specific operations
- creating Groups and setting folder permissions
Roles and privileges
Local administrators can give and revoke user privileges based on their role in your organisation.
A role is a collection of privileges that either grant or restrict a user’s ability to perform specific operations. Users can only be assigned a single role, including as many or as few privileges as needed.
Privileges enable users to perform essential tasks without additional setup.
Local administrators can customise roles by grouping privileges that align with your organisation’s needs. For example, roles can group privileges for managing files, projects, workflows, jobs, actions, admin settings, and trash.
For a comprehensive list of privileges, see Working with roles.
Groups and permissions
Local administrators can use groups and permissions to define who can access certain folders within Typefi Server.
A group is a collection of users for whom you want to control access to a folder. Any user belonging to a group that's linked to a folder will inherit the permissions assigned to that folder.
Permissions define the authorised actions (for example: copy, delete, rename, move, add files) that users can perform at the folder level. By default, Typefi Server users have read and write access to all folders.
Permission types include:
- Read & Write
- Read Only
- Write Only
- No Access
For more information about how to set up and manage groups, see Working with Groups.
How do groups and roles work together?
Beginning with Typefi Server v8.18, administrators can assign roles to entire groups of users, not just to individuals. This means that groups can inherit the privileges defined by a role—making it more efficient for large organisations to manage user groups rather than individuals.
To learn more about assigning a role to a group of users, see Working with Roles.
