What’s the difference between Typefitter 4 and Typefitter 5?

How do I upgrade from Typefitter 4 to Typefitter 5?

If you subscribed to Typefitter 4 prior to June 2021, you’re eligible for a free upgrade to Typefitter 5 Standard. In addition, with the release of Typefitter 5 Professional, you should also have received a coupon for a free upgrade to Typefitter 5 Professional. Upgrade instructions can be found in the Manage your Typefitter subscription article.

When you upgrade from Typefitter 4 to Typefitter 5, you do not need to reactivate Typefitter. Typefitter 5 Standard will automatically activate using your existing Typefitter 4 license.

While you can continue to download Typefitter 4 and activate it using a Typefitter 5 Standard subscription, Typefitter 4 is deprecated and will not be updated to natively support Adobe InDesign 16.3+ on Apple processors or any future major release of Adobe InDesign.

Typefitter 5 Professional adds support for Profiles (the successor to Typefitter 4’s Typefit Styles), automated copyfitting rules, and InDesign scripting (*requires the Scripting add-on).

Upgrade from Typefitter 4 to Typefitter 5

While Typefitter 4 documents can be opened with Typefitter 5, opening a Typefitter 5 document with Typefitter 4 is not supported. For more information, see Typefitter 4 and Typefitter 5 compatibility.

To install Typefitter 5, download the installer from our website. (For step-by-step installation instructions, see Install Typefitter).
Verify that Typefitter 5 is installed. Open Adobe InDesign, and from the Typefitter panel menu, choose About → About Typefitter.
Check that you see the Typefitter 5 splash screen.

If you do not see the Typefitter 5 splash screen, you are not using Typefitter 5. Please reinstall Typefitter 5, and if the issue is still not resolved, please contact us.

Are Typefitter 4 and Typefitter 5 compatible?

While Typefitter 4 documents can be opened with Typefitter 5, opening a Typefitter 5 document with Typefitter 4 is not supported.

Going from Typefitter 4 → Typefitter 5

To work on an InDesign document that was first manipulated with Typefitter 4:

Export the InDesign document file to IDML.
Open it in InDesign with Typefitter 5 installed.

Going from Typefitter 5 → Typefitter 4

Opening a Typefitter 5 document with Typefitter 4 is not supported. The workaround is to temporarily disable Typefitter 4 before you open the Typefitter 5 document. However, Adobe InDesign doesn‘t support plug-in management, so you must disable Typefitter 4 manually:

Quit InDesign.
Go to the InDesign application folder.
Create a Plug-Outs folder besides the built-in Plug-Ins folder.
Move the Typefitter 4 plug-ins (TypefitterGUI.InDesignPlugin and TypefitterModel.InDesignPlugin) from the Plug-Ins folder to the Plug-Outs folder. On macOS, this will require administrative access because of the permissions on the Typefi folder and its contents.

To re-enable Typefitter 4, move the plug-ins (TypefitterGUI.InDesignPlugin and TypefitterModel.InDesignPlugin) from the Plug-Outs folder back to the Plug-Ins folder.

Revert from Typefitter 5 to Typefitter 4

If you need to revert from Typefitter 5 to Typefitter 4:

Uninstall Typefitter 5.
From our website, click Free Download to download the Typefitter 4 installer.
Run the installer.

You do not need to reactivate Typefitter. Both Typefitter 4 and Typefitter 5 will automatically activate using your existing license.

When you open Adobe InDesign for the first time after reverting from Typefitter 5 → Typefitter 4, InDesign will display an alert during Starting up Service Registry:

InDesign preferences were created with a different version of Adobe InDesign.
Preferences will be reset to their default values.

This alert appears because Typefitter 5 added several new preferences (Copyfit Slider, Find What, and White Space Highlighter color) while also extending previous Typefitter 4 preferences (enabling tints of Copyfit Highlighter colors). We apologise for any inconvenience this resetting of preferences may cause.
