There are two components in a footnote: the in-text reference number and the footnote text at the bottom of the page.
When you publish a document with Typefi, Microsoft Word's built-in formatting options are replaced with the formatting specified in the Typefi-ready template (.indd). That's why footnotes in the Word document may look different than footnotes in the published document.
To insert a footnote, see Insert a footnote (Writer). To format footnotes with Typefi Designer, see Configure footnotes (Designer).
This table contrasts the formatting differences between footnotes you write in Word and how they may appear in the final publication.
Footnotes in Microsoft Word | Footnotes in your published InDesign document |
---|---|
Footnote numbers continue across section breaks. | Footnote numbers reset at every page, spread, or section* (according to the template settings). *Although InDesign doesn’t support continuous footnote numbering across sections, you can use the Footnote Continue Numbering module so that the footnotes are numbered continuously. Footnote numbers cannot be in a text box. | Footnote numbers can be in separate text frames. The footnote text is in the same frame as the footnote reference. |
Footnote text can span multiple columns. | Whether footnote text can span multiple columns is set in the template (see Span footnotes across columns). By default, the option to span footnotes across columns is enabled for new documents created in InDesign CC 2017 or later; the option is disabled by default for existing documents created in earlier versions. |
In a table cell, footnote numbers continue from the previous number. The footnote text is at the bottom of the page. | Footnote numbers can be in table cells when using InDesign CC 2019 or later. If a footnote number in a table cell is part of the Main Story Frame, the number continues from the previous reference number. The footnote text is placed at the bottom of the frame on the same page as the in-text reference. If a footnote in-text reference number in a table cell is part of Typefi Element, then the number restarts. The footnote text is placed at the bottom of the Element frame. |
