EPUB (Electronic PUBlication) is a widely supported and vendor-independent e-book format that can be read using Amazon Kindle, iBooks on Apple devices, Google Play Books on Android, or any modern web browser. Typefi workflows can natively generate versions 2.0.1 and 3.0.1 EPUBs or be post-processed to insert EPUB Scriptable Components. For more information about the EPUB plug-in, please get in touch.
The latest version of the EPUB plug-in is 13.0.140, released on 22 September 2025.
We release updates regularly, and it’s our goal to make sure that our software works well, constantly—that Typefi continues to deliver, every day. If you have any feedback or run into any issues, please drop us a line. We’re happy to help.
Action deprecation notice: As of 18 March 2025, Amazon no longer accepts MOBI file submissions for publishing eBooks. As a result, we have deprecated the Convert to MOBI workflow action (formerly Create MOBI). We recommend updating workflows to use the Generate EPUB action instead.
EPUB plug-in (13.0.140)
Released 22 September 2025
Requires Typefi Server 8.14 or later
Introducing the new EPUB plug-in: More power, more flexibility
We’re excited to release a completely re-engineered EPUB plug-in with a more flexible and powerful foundation. This new architecture separates the core plug-in from the CXML to HTML conversion logic, allowing us to make significant improvements to the Generate EPUB workflow action (formerly Create EPUB).
New features
The enhanced Generate EPUB workflow action features a more intuitive interface and greater control over your settings, allowing you to produce high-quality e-books more efficiently.
Key features include:
- A new Resources field is now available for adding our new core CXML to XHTML XZIP file (.xzip). This core transform will be made available to you by your Solutions consultant on the Typefi FTP. The core XZIP can be customised to allow the Typefi team to tailor your HTML output to your unique branding and structure requirements.
-
Customisable Table of Contents heading levels: (Requires CXML 3.3) In the Text tab, you can now specify which heading levels, from your Content XML (CXML), should appear in your Table of Contents (TOC). Just click the corresponding buttons (H1-H6) that match your CXML heading level tags (for example,
<h1 type="Heading 1"\>Content\</h1>). For more information on working with headings, see CXML 3.3.
This new foundation provides more than just new features. It means you can look forward to faster updates because we can now deploy bug fixes and release improvements without affecting the core plug-in and provide a foundation for future-ready customisations.
Ready to get started? You can start using the default setup straight away! Interested in customising? The EPUB plug-in (v13) is ready to grow with your publishing needs. Please contact your Typefi Solutions Consultant to learn more.
Additional improvements
-
General tab:
- Automatically generate EPUB 3.0, meeting the latest EPUB 3.3 specifications while maintaining backward compatibility with EPUB 2.x. This removes the need for a manual Version field.
- We’ve removed the Validation section. This allows you to integrate your preferred external validation tools into your workflow.
- To align with EPUB best practices and accessibility, and to produce lighter, more flexible files, we’ve removed the option to add fonts. If your project requires custom fonts, please contact your Typefi team to discuss a specialised solution.
- Moved the CSS field (previously in the External section) to a CSS tab and changed the name from CSS to Custom CSS. Additionally, the JavaScripts field moved to the Advanced tab.
- Added a Cover image field (previously in the Images tab).
- Added options to define the appearance of footnotes and endnotes in your e-books. On compatible devices, these notes will appear as interactive pop-ups.
-
Text tab:
- Renamed the Split document field At paragraphs to Enter parameters.
- In Split document → Enter parameters field, you can now choose to split your content into multiple web pages by adding one or more Typefi sections or paragraph styles--separated multiple entries by a comma (“,”). For more details, see the Text section in the help article, Generate EPUB.
-
CSS tab
- Added a CSS tab, where you can add multiple cascading stylesheets (CSS) to customise how images appear in your EPUB. Alternatively, you can choose to apply the built-in stylesheet, which runs by default. For more detail, see the CSS section in the help article, Generate EPUB.
-
Links tab (formerly Images):
- Updated the image processing logic. Now, when Optimize images is selected and the output format is set to GIF, JPEG, or PNG, the images are transformed based on the resolution, quality, and GIF palette settings you choose.
- Added an Advanced tab, where you can upload your JavaScript files.
- Added support for ImageMagick 7.
Fixes
- Merged cells now function correctly throughout tables, preventing: data loss, shifted content, and the creation of unexpected empty or extra cells.
- In the Text tab: Updated the Footnotes and Endnotes numbering style options to now include: (1, 2, 3; a, b, c; A, B, C; i, ii, iii; I, II, III)
- Image file paths in the XHTML are now correctly updated, ensuring they link to the assets in the EPUB’s images folder—preventing broken links.
- The Choose file dialog now correctly displays all image file options when selecting a cover image.
- Fixed an issue where EPUB files could fail validation if images were not correctly listed.
- Fixed a validation error where the last modified date in EPUB’s metadata was incorrectly formatted. The last modified date now correctly displays the expected ISO 8601 format
CCYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssZwhen running a job. - Fixed an issue where the removal of leading and trailing spaces could cause unwanted white space to appear in the generated EPUB.
