About MathTools ↩
Adobe InDesign and InDesign Server only support MathML, a low-level specification for encoding both the presentation of mathematical notation and mathematical content, through a third-party plug-in, movemen MathTools. MathTools provides native equation editor functionality—equations are expressed as fully editable text, not inline equations—and MathML import and export features.
Purchase MathTools ↩
There are two versions of MathTools: MathTools Enterprise and MathTools Pro. Both are available as a subscription.
Typefi requires MathTools Enterprise edition; MathTools Pro doesn't include the necessary scripting support for integration with Typefi workflows. However, if you need to edit equations in InDesign after Typefi's automated page composition process is complete, then you will need MathTools Pro and MathTools Enterprise.
For more information, or to purchase a MathTools subscription, contact your Typefi solutions consultant.
Install MathTools ↩
Note: To share a MathTools-enabled document with someone else that does not have MathTools, they need to download and install the free MathTools Reader plug-in or risk causing irreparable damage to your equations.
Your Typefi solutions consultant will email you the MathTools installation package. The installation package is a ZIP archive, which contains a root folder named movemen
and a few sub-folders. Do not rename, move around, or delete any folders in this ZIP archive.
Install MathTools for desktop
Download the package and—if using Microsoft Windows—unblock it before you extract the MathTools ZIP archive to the Plug-ins folder inside the InDesign application folder. Alternatively, you can extract the MathTools ZIP archive first, and then drag it into the Plug-ins folder inside the InDesign application folder.
Install MathTools for InDesign Server
Download the package and—if using Microsoft Windows—unblock it before you extract the MathTools ZIP archive to the Plug-ins folder inside the InDesign Server application folder. Or, you can extract the MathTools ZIP archive first, and then drag it into the Plug-ins folder inside the InDesign application folder. Alternatively, you can use a custom PowerShell script.
Manage your MathTools license ↩
After you purchase a MathTools subscription, Typefi will issue you a license, which allows you to use the full functionality of MathTools. Without a license, you only be able to use MathTools in Reader mode.
NOTE MathTools subscription licenses are only issued after Typefi has received payment. It may take up to 10 business days to receive a license.
Install license
- Locate your MathTools license file.
Your license is within the ZIP archive installation package you received from your Typefi solutions consultant. Be sure to unblock the file if using Microsoft Windows. - Open InDesign.
- From the InDesign menu bar, navigate to the MathTools license folder: Math → Support → Show In Finder → License Folder.
(If you don't see Math in the InDesign menu bar, make sure you have installed MathTools) - Extract the license file (from Step 1) to InDesign's License Folder.
- Close and reopen InDesign.
When you install the license, it is activated automatically.
Verify license
To verify your license is activated:
First:
- Open InDesign.
- In the InDesign menu bar, verify that the last label of the Math menu item does not read Invalid License or (READER). If it does read Invalid License or (READER), then your license is not activated.
Then:
- Create a new InDesign document.
- From the InDesign menu bar, select Math → Enable Math for Current Document
- Verify whether the MathStyles panel fly-out menu New MathStyle is enabled.
If it is enabled, your license is activated. 👍
Create a license report
For new licenses, you must create a license report. If you have an existing license, you can skip this procedure.
- Open InDesign.
- From the InDesign menu bar, select Math → Licensing → Create License Report. The name of the generated license report is
mt_licreport.xml
. - Email the license report,
mt_licreport.xml
, to help@typefi.com with the subject line: "MathTools license report".
Deactivate MathTools license
To deactivate a MathTools license:
- Open InDesign.
- Close all documents.
- From the InDesign menu bar, select Math → Licensing → Deactivate MathTools license.
NOTE Deactivating a MathTools license renames the existing license file to prevent auto-activation the next time you open InDesign. Keep the renamed license file in case you need to reactivate the license.
Activate license
When you install a new license, it is automatically activated. If you have deactivated your license, you can reactivate it by reinstalling the license file.
If you can't find the original license file (sent to you when you purchased MathTools), you can reactivate a deactivated license:
- Open InDesign.
- From the InDesign menu bar, select Math → Support → Show In Finder → License Folder.
- Within the License Folder, locate the license file and rename it
mt.MathTools.lic
. - Close and reopen InDesign.
NOTE Reactivating a license requires internet access to the activation servers. If the activation failed, see the MathTools Activation Issues PDF document, located in the MathTools installation's docs folder (for example, movemen/docs/MathTools Activation Issues.pdf
). If you experience any issues, create a new license report and send it to help@typefi.com.
Update MathTools ↩
To update to the latest version of MathTools:
- Download the latest MathTools maintenance build from the movemen download area. If you are using Microsoft Windows, make sure you unblock it.
- If InDesign is open, close InDesign.
- Move the
movemen
folder from the InDesign Plug-ins folder somewhere else (for example, your Desktop). - Extract the ZIP archive you downloaded in Step 1 to the InDesign Plug-ins folder inside the InDesign application folder.
- Navigate to your old
movemen
folder (moved in Step 3) and select the license file (for example,movemen/lic/mt.MathToolsV2.dat
). - Copy your existing license file and paste it into the new
movemen
folder you extracted to the InDesign Plug-ins folder in Step 4. - Open InDesign.
