Overview of Intelligently Break URLs
Long URLs can be problematic, especially in multi-column layouts: they don't fit the type measure and cause the story to become permanently overset. To divide URLs we must first be able to match them, for which we use John Gruber's public-domain improved, liberal RegEx for matching URLs with some small adaptations. After matching URLs, break points are inserted, following the rules outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style. These rules are the most elaborate (that we're aware of) and are generally accepted.
If different rules are required, the script can be customized to follow those rules instead. Talk to your Typefi Solutions Consultant or Business Development Manager about having a custom script developed.
How to configure Intelligently Break URLs in a workflow
The Intelligently Break URLs script is a SpillEnd event. Your workflow should be configured to run SpillEnd scripts, and the script should be placed in the SpillEnd folder on the InDesign server. There is no configuration table needed in the template.
